Tryout FAQ

Question: Does the Waves require my daughter to tryout out for her age group as defined by USAV?

Answer: Yes, It is the West Florida Waves Volleyball Club policy that ALL players tryout out for their age group as defined by USAV.

Question: My daughter is in a different grade than her age group can she tryout for her grade level instead of her age group?

Answer:  The official policy of the West Florida Waves is that all players will tryout for their age group based on the USAV age definition chart included on this page regardless of their grade in school.

Question: Do the Waves allow players to play up an age group?

Answer: In general the Waves do not allow players to “play up” however if the player has shown that they have progressed beyond their age group and all coaches and directors involved agree that it is best for both the players and the teams there are exceptions made on a case by case basis.

Question: Can a player decline to be moved up if they are asked to?

Answer:  Parents ultimately have the authority to decline the invitation to play up an age group

Question: My daughter has played with her grade and not her age group in the past for the Waves or other clubs, can she still stay with her same team?

Answer: The directors at the Waves understand that the new age definitions and also circumstances have created situations where athletes are part of established age groups. They will always endeavor to do what is best for the players and the teams and realize that forcing a player to change age groups may not be in the best interest of the athletes. Each situation will be decided on a case by case basis based on the established Waves policies with all parties involved being a part of the outcome.

Question: If my daughter does not make a Power (1) team but instead makes a Club(2) team at one age group can she then tryout for a different age group?

Answer:  No.
